Steam Removed Nearly 1500 Bad Reviews for Tekken 8, Changing its Rating to “Mostly Positive”

Bandai Namco’s latest installment in the Tekken franchise has encountered a rocky road since its release nine months ago. Tekken 8, while initially well-received, has seen its Steam review scores fluctuate dramatically amid fan dissatisfaction.

The game’s reception on Steam has been a rollercoaster ride, with review scores starting high but gradually declining over time. This downward trend has been punctuated by what some describe as coordinated efforts from disgruntled fans to voice their dissatisfaction.

The situation reached a critical point last week when Tekken 8’s recent reviews plummeted to “Mostly Negative,” while its overall rating dropped to “Mixed.” However, in a surprising turn of events, the game’s standing has since improved. Current ratings show “Mixed” for recent reviews and “Mostly Positive” overall.

On October 9, Eventhubs noted that the game had amassed 25,408 “overall” reviews. However, by October 16, this figure had decreased by 1,482, bringing the total down to 23,926. The change in “recent” reviews was even more dramatic. The count plummeted from 1,902 to a mere 817, representing a reduction of 1,085 reviews in just one week.

Steam has since added an asterisk to the review graphs, explaining the reason behind this change. This substantial decrease in review numbers appears to be linked to Steam’s efforts to combat what they term “off-topic review activity.” This phrase is often used to describe “review bombing,” a phenomenon where users flood a game’s page with negative reviews, often in response to issues not directly related to the game’s quality or performance.

Platforms like Steam typically intervene in such situations when they believe that an influx of negative reviews does not accurately reflect the general public’s genuine opinion of the game.

This isn’t the first time Tekken 8 fans have review-bombed the game. A similar instance occurred in April when the game’s rating plummeted to “Mostly Negative.” This sharp decline was attributed to widespread disapproval among players regarding the Tekken Shop and certain DLC practices.

Additionally, the introduction of Heihachi’s new Genmaji Temple stage sparked frustration among players. This new content, priced at $4.99, is not included in any existing bundles, including those purchased by fans who invested in the most expensive versions of the game with DLC.
