Latest Update on 6 September Holiday in Pakistan 2024

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MoIB) has officially refuted claims circulating on social media regarding a public holiday on 6 September 2024 for Defence Day. In a recent statement, the MoIB confirmed that the notification suggesting a holiday is false. Their Fact Checker platform further stressed that sharing unverified or misleading information is both irresponsible and illegal. The ministry called on the public to verify sources before forwarding such claims, especially on social media where misinformation can quickly gain traction.

Defence Day, celebrated annually on 6 September, commemorates Pakistan’s military success and sacrifices during the 1965 war with India. While the day holds immense significance, the federal government discontinued its observance as a public holiday in 1998. Prior to that, Defence Day had been a nationwide holiday, with the last official break taking place in 1997. Despite its importance in Pakistan’s history, the day is now marked through official ceremonies, events, and tributes rather than a public holiday.

For 2024, no official directive has been issued to reinstate 6 September as a public holiday. Citizens are encouraged to follow credible news outlets and government sources for any changes and to refrain from engaging with or spreading unfounded information.
