State Minister Pledges Government Support to Strengthen CCP

State Minister for Finance and Revenue Ali Pervaiz Malik visited the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) on Wednesday, highlighting the Commission’s critical role in preventing market failures and protecting consumers from anti-competitive practices.

During his visit, Malik reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to enhancing the CCP’s capacity to improve its effectiveness, which may involve legislative reforms, follow-ups on court cases, and capacity-building initiatives.

In his address to CCP officials, he emphasized the necessity of a comprehensive review of the Competition Act to ensure it remains modern, effective, and relevant in addressing the challenges currently faced by the Commission.

“Competitiveness in markets is vital for protecting consumer interests. It also encourages new startups and attracts investments,” stated Malik.

CCP Chairman Dr. Kabir Ahmed Sidhu provided the minister with an overview of the Commission’s functions, performance, and ongoing inquiries in key economic sectors. He also highlighted the challenges the CCP encounters, particularly legal obstacles.

The minister expressed his full support for the CCP in overcoming these challenges and requested a detailed list of pending court cases and stay orders to discuss with the Attorney General and the Law Ministry for expedited resolution. He urged the chairman to maintain close coordination with the Finance Ministry to ensure effective oversight of consumer interests.
