Google Chrome Now Tells You Which Tab is Using Too Much RAM
Google Chrome is notorious for its memory-consuming tabs, despite its memory-saving features. However, the popular internet browser now has a new feature to help identify which tabs are using the most memory.
The latest update introduces “Performance issue alerts” and enhancements to the existing Memory Saver feature, which automatically optimizes resources for inactive tabs.
A newly implemented Performance Detection system actively monitors tab behavior, triggering alerts when individual tabs exceed normal resource consumption. Users can easily spot these notifications through a speedometer-style indicator, conveniently positioned next to their account profile picture in Chrome’s main toolbar.
Clicking the speedometer icon reveals a detailed list of problematic tabs, presenting users with two options: “Dismiss” the alert or take immediate action with a “Fix now” button.
You can find the new Performance Alerts feature in Chrome’s settings menu. Click the three-dot menu near your account photo, head over to Settings, and navigate to the “Performance” tab on the left. Under the General category, a new “Performance issue alerts” toggle has been added, while the Memory section below contains the enhanced Memory Saver options.
If you are experiencing issues with Chrome’s memory usage, try using the Memory Saver option introduced in 2022. It puts your tabs to sleep soon after they become inactive. You can choose between “Moderate”, “Balanced”, and “Maximum.” For lower-end devices, the “Maximum” option is recommended.
