Meta Developing AI Search Engine to Compete with Google and Bing

According to sources cited by The Information, Meta is in the process of creating its own artificial intelligence-powered search engine, a strategic move aimed at reducing its reliance on major tech giants like Google and Microsoft. The new system is expected to integrate with Meta’s AI chatbot, providing AI-generated summaries of current events and news.

Currently, Meta’s AI assistant, which is embedded within the Facebook and Instagram platforms, relies on Microsoft’s Bing and Google’s search engines to process user queries. However, this dependency is set to change in the near future. The timing of this announcement is particularly noteworthy as Alphabet, Google’s parent company, prepares to unveil its quarterly financial results tomorrow.

Evidence of Meta’s ambitions in the AI search arena surfaced several months ago when the company’s web crawler was spotted actively indexing internet content. This development reinforces the social media giant’s intentions to establish its own independent search infrastructure.

The Information also reports that a dedicated team at Meta has spent approximately eight months building a detailed information database to support its chatbot system. Moreover, Meta’s efforts extend beyond AI search, as the company is also developing location-based services that could potentially compete with Google Maps.

This initiative reflects similar moves by Meta’s rivals in the tech industry. Bloomberg’s analysis last month highlighted Apple’s enhancements to its App Store search capabilities, indicating that the company has the necessary infrastructure to launch its own AI-powered alternative to Google’s search dominance.

In addition to these developments, Meta recently strengthened its content portfolio by securing a multi-year partnership with Reuters. This agreement grants Meta’s chatbot access to Reuters’ extensive archive of news articles, further advancing its search independence
