WhatsApp to Introduce Link Verification Feature for Enhanced User Safety
WhatsApp, one of the leading messaging applications, is continuously improving its safety features to protect users from potential threats. The Meta-owned platform already offers tools such as automatic spam detection and timely security alerts.
In its latest update, WhatsApp is rolling out a beta feature that enables users to verify links found in messages through Google Search. This feature is currently available on the Android beta version 2.24.22.19, as reported by WABetaInfo.
The new “link info” option allows users to check virtually any link shared in WhatsApp, not just those that are frequently forwarded. Users can access this feature by long-pressing a link they have received or sent. A “Get link info on Google” option will appear beneath “Copy link” and “Open link.” Selecting this option will open the Google app and display relevant information about the selected URL, making it easier for users to avoid suspicious links.
Initially, WABetaInfo noted that this feature was limited to frequently forwarded links, which previously had a “Search on the web” option for additional details. However, the latest update indicates that this safety feature is now applicable to all links. It remains unclear whether the older “Search on Web” option will continue to be available alongside this new feature, as both could serve distinct purposes.
As of now, the updated link verification system is still in beta testing, so it is uncertain when it will be released to all users.
