Zakir Naik Social Media Account Blocked in India Following Pakistan Tour
Islamic preacher Zakir Naik social media account on the platform “X” (formerly known as Twitter) has been blocked in India. This move comes after Naik’s recent visit to Pakistan, which stirred diplomatic tensions between the two countries, especially given the warm reception he received there.
India’s Diplomatic Reaction
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) strongly criticized how Zakir Naik was welcomed during his Pakistan visit. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal voiced India’s discontent in a press briefing, stating, “It’s not surprising that an Indian fugitive received such a welcome in Pakistan. While it’s disappointing and condemnable, it is not unexpected.”
He also raised concerns about the passport Naik used for his travel to Pakistan, as his Indian passport was previously revoked, leaving questions about his current travel documents.
Zakir Naik’s Pakistan Tour
Naik’s visit to Pakistan came at the invitation of the Pakistani government, which rolled out the red carpet for him. During his month-long stay, he met with prominent figures, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar. Naik’s tour includes several public speeches in major cities like Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore, drawing significant attention from both the public and Indian authorities.
Who is Zakir Naik?
Zakir Naik, founder of the Islamic Research Foundation, is a controversial figure wanted in India on charges of money laundering and promoting extremism. In 2016, after legal actions were initiated against him, Naik fled to Malaysia, where he has since resided. His sermons came under greater scrutiny following the July 2016 Dhaka terror attack, where one of the attackers claimed to have been influenced by Naik’s teachings available on YouTube.
India has been pushing for Naik’s extradition, but Malaysia has so far refused to comply. Despite his legal troubles, Naik continues to give speeches internationally, including his current tour in Pakistan.
Tensions Between India and Pakistan
The blocking of Zakir Naik’s social media account in India is a clear sign of the growing tensions between India and Pakistan, especially in light of his recent tour. Naik’s presence in Pakistan and the diplomatic fallout have only added fuel to the already strained relations between the two nations. With unresolved extradition requests and ongoing diplomatic friction, the Zakir Naik controversy is far from over and is likely to remain a contentious issue in both countries.
