Is Air Link Planning to Establish a Xiaomi EV Plant in Pakistan? CEO Piracha Provides Clarity
Recent discussions have emerged regarding Air Link’s potential establishment of a Xiaomi electric vehicle (EV) assembly plant in Pakistan. These speculations were fueled by reports of Xiaomi SU7 EVs being spotted at the Karachi port. However, CEO Muzzaffar Hayat Piracha has clarified that while the company has imported two Xiaomi SU7 electric cars, no plans for a local assembly facility have been finalized yet. In a statement to the media, he remarked, “We have always been leaders in innovation and growth. Decisions about setting up an assembly plant will be based on market conditions and strategic alignment.”
Air Link is already manufacturing Xiaomi and Tecno smartphones in Pakistan, leading to speculation about a potential expansion into the EV market. However, the company has not confirmed any such developments, and Piracha remained reserved, offering no concrete information on future ventures in the EV sector.
During the media interaction, Muzaffar acknowledged the growing presence of international players, especially Chinese EV manufacturers, in Pakistan’s automotive market. “Pakistan is poised to be a significant market, given its strategic location and strong government backing for export-oriented industries,” he added.
It’s important to note that Air Link has reported an impressive 382% profit increase for the fiscal year 2023-24. The company has also diversified its portfolio by producing smart TVs in collaboration with Xiaomi at its Lahore facility. Given these developments, there is a possibility that Air Link might consider substantial investments in the EV sector if conducive policies are implemented.
