The Tragic Murder of Moumita Debnath: A Family’s Quest for Justice

The tragic murder of dr Moumita Debnath, a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, has shocked the nation. Her parents have made serious allegations, claiming that their daughter was deliberately targeted and killed because she knew “dark secrets.”

Moumita’s body was found semi-naked in the seminar hall of the hospital on August 9, 2023. The following day, Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was arrested. An autopsy later confirmed that Moumita had been raped and murdered.

In interviews with the media, Moumita’s parents have expressed their belief that Sanjoy Roy was not acting alone. They allege that someone had sent him to kill their daughter. According to Moumita’s mother, her daughter had uncovered some dangerous information, which led to her murder.

Moumita’s mother also criticized the handling of the situation by the authorities. She expressed frustration that they were made to wait to see their daughter’s body and questioned why it took four hours to reveal her face. She believes that the hospital and police were trying to hide something.

Moumita’s parents have also voiced their disappointment with Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College. They claim that he never reached out to apologize after the incident. They mentioned that dr Moumita was afraid Dr. Ghosh would cause her to fail her MD exams, which added to her stress.

Moumita was dedicated to her work and studies. Even after 36-hour shifts, she would continue her education, and she was committed to achieving a Doctorate of Medicine (DM) after completing her MD. Her mother fondly recalled how dr Moumita used to study tirelessly and had even brought books to prepare for her DM exams.

The day dr Moumita was killed, she had planned to order medicine for her father and have dinner afterward. Her mother believes that her last thoughts were of her family, making the loss even more painful.

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose visited dr Moumita family, assuring them that justice would be served. The family is seeking answers and justice for their daughter, who had dreamed of achieving great things in her life.
