Facebook Access Issues in Pakistan: Impact and Resolution

Users across Pakistan, including major cities like Lahore, are facing difficulties accessing the social media platform Facebook. Despite these widespread issues, neither Facebook’s parent organization Meta nor NetBlocks has confirmed any complaints.

Details of the Problem

On Tuesday and Wednesday, numerous Internet Service Providers (ISPs) throughout Pakistan struggled to provide users with access to Facebook. This led to many complaints on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), where users reported being unable to log into their Facebook accounts. Some even speculated whether the government had imposed a ban on Facebook.

According to DownDetector PK, a social media monitoring platform based in Pakistan, complaints about Facebook access began to surge from noon on Monday and continued to increase until noon on Wednesday.

DownDetector’s Interface and Categories

DownDetector PK has introduced an interface for registering complaints regarding Facebook issues, categorizing the problems into three main areas: server connection, login, and the app itself. The platform aims to provide feedback to the relevant service based on these categories. Users can also log other types of complaints if they encounter different issues.

Complaint Statistics

A chart compiled by DownDetector shows the categories of complaints registered over a 24-hour period. It indicates that problems are reported throughout the day, with a noticeable increase in complaints between 1 AM and 1 PM. The lowest number of complaints is recorded between 7 AM and 10 AM.

The breakdown of complaints is as follows:

  • Server connection issues: 46%
  • App-related problems: 29%
  • Login difficulties: 26%

Conclusion

The ongoing issues with Facebook access in Pakistan have significantly impacted users, leading to a surge in complaints and speculation about the reasons behind the disruptions. While official confirmations from Meta or NetBlocks are still pending, the detailed data from DownDetector provides a clear picture of the situation, highlighting the need for a swift resolution to restore normal access for users.
